Melle Koch onderzocht diverse syntheseroutes om purinemoleculen zó te veranderen dat ze selectief werken op één receptor in het lichaam, de adenosinereceptor. De onderzochte stoffen hebben hoge activiteit op de adenosinereceptor en kunnen worden gebruikt in geneesmiddelonderzoek. Koch ontwikkelde geneesmiddelen voor de ziekte van Parkinson via blokkade van de adenosine A2A-receptor. Bij toeval werden ook stoffen gevonden die sterk actief en selectief zijn voor de A3-receptor. Deze kunnen gebruikt worden in experimenteel onderzoek naar astma, glaucoom en sommige types kanker.
