Pieter Bot beschrijft het ontstaan van atherosclerose (aderverkalking) en arteriogenese (de groei van overbruggingsbloedvaten). Arteriogenese zorgt voor alternatieve bloedstroomroutes, waarmee een obstructie in de bloedbaan wordt omzeild. Bij een deel van de patiënten gebeurt dit onvoldoende. Zij hebben belang bij het stimuleren van de groei van overbruggingsbloedvaten. Dat mag natuurlijk geen negatieve uitwerking hebben op aderverkalking en de stabiliteit van de plaques die hierbij ontstaan. Instabiele plaques kunnen scheuren en leiden tot hersen- en hartinfarcten. Bot toont aan dat een veelbelovende groeifactor een positieve invloed heeft op de stabiliteit van aderverkalkingsplaques: dit maakt het molecuul een potentiële kandidaat voor toekomstige therapieën.
