Hartontwikkeling is een complex proces. Razendsnel transformeert het hart in wording van een buisvormige structuur naar een hart met vier kamers. Dit is mogelijk door toevoeging van cellen aan de instroom- en uitstroomzijde en door lokale verschillen in celdeling. Bouke de Boer kon met de genexpressiepatronen van twaalf genen in een 3D-model van het hart achttien ruimtelijke domeinen definiƫren, elk met een uniek genexpressieprofiel. Twee van die gebieden leidden tot de ontdekking van een nieuwe geninteractie. Ook zag De Boer grote verschillen in celdelingssnelheid tussen de verschillende delen van het hart.
