In dit artikel onderzoeken Laurens Dragstra & Taco Groenewegen de wortels van het volkstribunaat, die 2000 jaar geleden in de Romeinse Republiek te vinden zijn. De Romeinse Republiek kende verschillende magistraten, zoals consuls, quaestors en praetoren. Die magistraten werden jaarlijks verkozen en vervulden hun ambt doorgaans met één of meerdere collega’s. Ook de tien volkstribunen (tribuni plebis) werden jaarlijks verkozen. Dragstra en Groenewegen bespreken de hoofdlijnen in de ontwikkeling van het tribunaat aan de hand van het levensverhaal van de flamboyante Publius Clodius Pulcher.
