De animo om deel te nemen aan een bevolkingsonderzoek naar darmkanker met een CT-scan van de darm is groter dan de animo om deel te nemen aan een onderzoek met coloscopie.
Dat blijkt uit een proefbevolkingsonderzoek naar darmkanker uitgevoerd door Thomas de Wijkerslooth.
De sterfte aan darmkanker neemt af door vroege detectie van de voorlopers van darmkanker (adenomen) en darmkanker zelf. Een van de manieren om dit te bereiken is met een bevolkingsonderzoek. De Wijkerslooth benaderde bijna negenduizend willekeurig geselecteerde burgers voor een proefbevolkingsonderzoek. Ze kregen een uitnodiging om deel te nemen aan coloscopie (waarbij de darm wordt geïnspecteerd met een slang die via de anus in de dikke darm wordt geschoven) of screening met CT-colografie. Een significant lager aantal personen nam deel aan coloscopie vergeleken met de CT-screening: 22 procent versus 34 procent.
In de coloscopiegroep werden meer adenomen en werd meer darmkanker gedetecteerd, waardoor de diagnostische opbrengst per ‘genodigde’ vergelijkbaar was tussen beide groepen.
De Wijkerslooth bespreekt in zijn proefschrift ook de factoren die de deelnamegraad en de diagnostische opbrengst van coloscopie-screening beïnvloeden. - Note
