Het syndroom van Crigler-Najjar type I (CNI) is een erfelijke afwijking van de lever veroorzaakt door een tekort van het leverenzym uridine-diphosphoglucuronosyltransferase. Dit enzym helpt bij de uitscheiding van een giftig bestanddeel van de lever in de gal. Paula de Sousa Montenegro Miranda onderzocht de ontwikkeling van gentherapie voor patiƫnten met CNI. Ze bestudeerde onder meer hoe het ingebrachte gen reageert op de gastheer in een diermodel. Haar resultaten hebben de weg geopend naar een eerste klinisch onderzoek bij patiƫnten.
