Bloedonderzoek geeft maar een beperkte indruk van het afweersysteem, ontdekte Simone Havenith.
Havenith vergeleek lymfeklieren uit vetweefsel van transplantatiepatiënten met perifeer bloed. Ze keek daarbij onder andere naar CD8-effectorcellen, die veel voorkomen in het bloed van mensen die een infectie hebben doorgemaakt met cytomegalovirus (CMV). In de lymfeklieren trof Havenith, anders dan verwacht, maar weinig van deze cellen aan. Wel vond ze daar meer en actievere CD4-T-helpercellen (samen met B-cellen betrokken bij het produceren van antistoffen) dan in het bloed. Ze concludeert dan ook dat het bloedbeeld geen honderd procent representatieve afspiegeling is van ‘het’ immuunsysteem. - Note
