Een uitwendige endeldarmverzakking moet vooraf gegaan worden door een inwendige. Een kijkoperatie waarbij de endeldarm wordt opgehangen in originele positie, levert goede resultaten op bij tachtigplussers met een uitwendige endeldarmverzakking en bij patiƫnten met een inwendige endeldarmverzakking. Een rectum prolaps is een endeldarmverzakking. De uitwendige vorm is een bekende aandoening, maar de inwendige variant is minder bekend. Niels Wijffels beschrijft de klachten die passen bij een inwendige endeldarmverzakking, waarbij incontinentie het meest blijkt voor te komen. Gevoelloosheid van de endeldarm, wat voorheen als oorzaak gezien werd voor obstipatie (verstopping), komt zelden voor.
