In Nederland lopen hiv-positieve mannen die seks hebben met mannen de meeste kans op een infectie met het hepatitis C-virus (HCV). Voorheen waren dat injecterende druggebruikers en hemofiliepatiënten.
Dit constateert Anouk Urbanus in haar onderzoek naar het voorkomen van HCV onder nieuwe en bekende risicogroepen. In haar onderzoek geeft ze aan voor welke groepen een gericht screeningsprogramma nodig is. Niet-westerse migranten van de eerste generatie in Nederland vormen de grootste groep met een bestaande HCV-infectie. Zij zijn veelal geïnfecteerd geraakt in hun land van herkomst. Daarnaast doen veel van de nog niet opgespoorde HVC-infecties zich voor onder mensen die in het verleden risico liepen op HCV (ooit een bloedtransfusie ondergaan, ooit drugs gespoten) en zichzelf niet als risicogroep zien.
HCV-screeningsprogramma’s moeten zich richten op deze risicogroepen (hiv-positieve mannen die seks hebben met mannen, niet-westerse migranten van de eerste generatie en mensen die in het verleden risico hebben gelopen). Daarnaast concludeert Urbanus dat screenings- en preventieprogramma’s voor traditionele risicogroepen, zoals injecterende druggebruikers, gecontinueerd dienen te worden. - Note
