What’s Neo about the Neo-Avant-Garde?»:
Rather than cancel the project of the historical avant-garde, might the neo-avant-garde comprehend it for the first time? I say «comprehend», not «complete»: the project of the avant-garde is no more concluded in its neo moment than it is enacted in its historical moment» (Foster 1994, 16).
English summary
In the dissertation I investigate how the early authorship of Karin Moe connects to literary tradition, literary theory, and philosophy, and how Moe’s writing responds to cultural and social conditions. Analyses of trans-textual relations are central to the study. The fundamentally experimental attitude that marks Moe’s first books calls for a focus upon avant-gardism. Her main interest in the context of the avant-garde is surrealism. Consequently, the thesis of the dissertation is based on a central question from Hal Foster’s “What’s Neo about the Neo-Avant-Garde?”:
Rather than cancel the project of the historical avant-garde, might the neo-avant-garde comprehend it for the first time? I say «comprehend», not «complete»: the project of the avant-garde is no more concluded in its neo moment than it is enacted in its historical moment» (Foster 1994, 16).
I argue that Moe’s writing demonstrates how the avant-garde is an ongoing project. Her authorship exemplifies the continuing dialogue between the different phases of the avant-garde, and it also shows how this dialogue can increase our understanding of the different phases. A particular understanding and interpretation of the earlier avant-gardes is fundamental to Moe’s authorship, and it is decisive for the texts that are investigated in the dissertation. Moe’s understanding and interpretation give room for the expansion, critique, and transposition, which are characteristic of her work.
