Abstract

Cantilever bridges made of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete, with their diverse arrangements, have given a fundamental contribution to the development of bridge construction. Many of these bridges, built more than a century ago, are still in service. Such an extended period of use allows us to ascertain their performances over time and also to highlight their most common draw-backs. With the hindsight of a century and a half of accrued experience, this paper will present an overview of how these bridges are performing today under the wear of time and increasingly heavy traffic intensities.
