This paper focuses on the issues caused by the regenerative braking on the conventional protection scheme of DC traction systems. The problem is simulated using a subway system based on bilateral power supply mode and its operation under different fault conditions is analyzed. In the work, it is possible to observe that some faults could remain undetected with the conventional overcurrent protection scheme in the presence of trains in regenerative braking.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the issues caused by the regenerative braking on the conventional protection scheme of DC traction systems. The problem is simulated using a subway system based on bilateral power supply mode and its operation under different fault conditions is analyzed. In the work, it is possible to observe that some faults could remain undetected with the conventional overcurrent protection scheme in the presence of trains in regenerative braking.
