Abstract "Europe of cities Europe of regions" Since the birth of the first urban aggregations, the organised and established structure of the human landscape has been based upon land communication links, occasionally upon waterways, and most recently upon airways. To think about its design and to give to these links a concrete shape means, above all, dealing with town planning and macro planning, in the most complete sense of its meaning. Assuming that the road network can accomplish the decisive task of guaranteeing the short range relathionship and that the air network can guarantee the long range relathionships, we need to assess which transport modes can answer to the intense demand of regional scale mobility that, in the Europe of cities, corresponds more frequently with transnational mobility. The answer, deeply documentated in the developed research, lies with the high speed train network, the communication links of the continental regions integration.
