Abstract

Based on the analyses of N. Elias concerning the “social learning” of selfawareness as well as on studies by M. Perrot on the role of housing in the valorization of private life, this article interprets Le Cousin Pons as a reflection on the relationship between the interiority of the individual and the surrounding social world. Status as a single person and the hero’s status as artist is related to the topic of home violation and the importance of threshold figures.
