Over the last fifteen years a lot of researches aimed at the recovery, preservation and enhancement of minor crops were conducted, especially by fieldwork, according to an interdisciplinary approach involving many knowledge (geography, cultural anthropology, agricultural genetics, botany, history, economics). In fact, the recovery and enhancement of old local varieties of cultivated species are functional for many purposes: the conservation of biological diversity, ecological preservation and landscape, at last, last but not least, the local development of rural areas. This paper outlines historical development, distribution, diffusion and socio-cultural importance of some known minor crops in Central Italy: two crops (bean of Turano and apple Panaia of Tuscany) are of high interest for the conservation of indigenous genetic resources; the others (onion of Cannara and red potato of Colfiorito), although not valuable for that purpose, have long been important resources for economic development of rural areas.
