Abstract
Young black South Africans living in the townships that surround each city and town in this country are investing time, energy and talent in making theatre that they perform when the opportunity presents itself. Each year a selection of these productions is showcased at the Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival, hosted by the Baxter Theatre since 1998. This year I immersed myself in the experience of theatre that the festival provides and certain aspects of the work were both immediately striking and also precipitated this enquiry into the relationship between the theatre works, the ways in which the plays are created, issues of identity as explored both in the plays and my research, and the township.
