Field hockey in Anadolu Hisarı

Description:Men playing field hockey on a lawn near Anadolu Hisarı. One team is wearing white jerseys, the other dark. All the players wear shorts and socks, some also caps. Four players are moving towards two men who are fighting for the ball. A fifth player is walking on the other side of the field. In the centre of the photograph, a member of the white team has a jersey with dark stripes, slightly different to those of his teammates. Spectators, almost exclusively male, are sitting and standing on a small slope at the edge of the pitch.
Comment:Field hockey was introduced to the Ottoman Empire by the British, who organized a first match in Kadıköy in 1910. During World War I, Fenerbahçe Kulübü was among the first clubs to popularize hockey within the Ottoman Empire and later in the Turkish Republic.
