Abstract: Annelerin doğuma yönelik duygu ve düşünceleri konusunda çalışmalar olmasına karşılık babaların duygu ve düşünceleri yeterince araştırılmamıştır.
Although there are studies on the emotions and thoughts about childbirth of mothers, the emotions and thoughts of fathers have not been studied sufficiently. This study was made with the aim of determining the emotions and thoughts about childbirth of first time fathers. The research was carried out at the Pamukkale University Hospital and the Denizli State Hospital in Denizli Province. Seventeen fathers were taken into the scope of the research who were fathers for the first time, whose spouses had a healthy pregnancy and childbirth, who had a healthy newborn, whose spouses had given birth within three days, who were 18 years of age or older and who voluntarily participated in the study. The research was a qualitative study in which a definitive, phenomenological approach was used. An Introductory Information Form and a Semi-Structured Interview form were used in the research. The data were collected by the researcher in face-to-face in-depth interviews. The interviews varied between 23 minutes and 46 minutes. The data were collected under three main themes: thoughts about childbirth, emotions about childbirth and coping with childbirth. Fathers wanted to participate in childbirth, but it was impossible for them to participate in childbirth since the hospitals didn’t not permit this. Fathers felt different emotions, such as fear, excitement and happiness prior to childbirth, during childbirth and after childbirth. Fathers felt a need for support in order to be able to cope with their fears. It is important for fathers to participate in antenatal education for them to be included in the process of childbirth. Health personnel should provide the care and support for which fathers feel a need during the process of childbirth and should assist the fathers in expressing their emotions.
