Today, fossil fuels are about to run out in these days and energy demand is increasing because of the high increase on population. The energy demand is not the only problem. Fossil fuels also effects the nature because of the green house gases. The CO2 emissions are the main problem that causes the global warming, which have various effects on the world's climate. Because of these problems, changing the energy strategies to using the energy in more efficient way and using renewable energy sources became a must for the whole world. Buildings need 32% of total energy usage so; there are some improvements about this energy problem. The main improvement about these problems is using renewable energy in buildings. Solar energy is the main renewable energy source and buildings using this source especially for heating. These systems started with basic water heating but right know buildings using for both domestic hot water consumption, heating system support and pool heating. There are also some systems that producing heat for industry process. Building more district heating systems than individual heating systems and increase on usage of renewable energy, especially solar energy, gives a potential to use district heating systems with renewable energy. Because of the working principle of the solar energy systems, increase on heat demand also increase the efficience. This effect is related to the increase on solar collectors, which is related directly to the system efficiency. Since the higher demand means higher efficiency in solar thermal systems, district heating strategies is the benefical way to use the solar energy for heating. Scandinavian countries have most common applications with this strategy. Turkey has a huge potential in solar irradiation potential and have the third place after the United States and China according to the total solar thermal collector. Turkey has the 3,3% of the total capacity of the world. People using the solar thermal systems since 1980s. It can be said that Turkey have the enough knowledge and experience in the solar thermal systems. Turkey mainly use solar heating system in individual or commercial buildings. Eventhough Turkey have a wide experience and knowledge in solar thermal systems, there isn't any solar thermal district heating systems in whole country. There is'nt also any research or any project about this heating strategy. Turkey's district heating systems are also limited. There are three main systems and just one of them using renewable energy for heating. This system is in Izmir region and using geothermal energy for heating the buildings near to Narlıdere-Balçove districts of Izmir region. The aim of this project is proving that district heating strategy is the more efficient especially in solar thermal heating systems. This thesis will inspire the following researches and project about district solar thermal heating systems in Turkey. This thesis will prove that using solar district heating systems in Turkey is feasible with help of T*SOL modeling. T*SOL is the system that developed by Valentine Software company. The first version of T*SOL was started in 1993 so developers have enough experience about the solar thermal modelling. Moreover, their climate library and system components library is also wide enough and because of these advantages many big companies of solar thermal sector is already using this system for modelling their projects. A district which have 6 dormitories and a sports center was chosed in Istanbul Technical University, Ayazaga Campus. Total capacity of these dormitories are 1.282 people. Moreover, 300 people uses the showers of the sports center in Ayazağa Campus. System will have four main strategy. First strategy is using district heating type for heating. Second strategy is using this system for domestic hot water consumption. Third strategy is using a active solar thermal system with flat plate collectors. The last strategy is using existing systems for reducing the investment cost of the system. Because of the first strategy, system will have an collector area and a heat transfer station will be used. Moreover, system will have an distribution pipelines which will be like the city water pipelines. Because of large distribuiton system, heat transfer station will have additional pumps. Both second and forth strategys led the system to use pre-heating technique. This means solar thermal system will heat the cold municipal water before it gets in the existing system. Since the both buildings have their own heating system, district heating system will distribute the hot water to these buildings existing system. If the solar energy is enough for domestic hot water demand, the hot water from solar thermal district system will be used directly. However, if the heat is not enough for hot water demand, solar thermal district heating system will support the existing systems. T*SOL modelling program is used for this design. The selected area's climate data found in the T*SOL's library. The Buderus SKN 4.0 flat plate collectors are chosen and the technical data of these col According to these modelling program, using 250 flat plate collector maket he system efficient and safe. Total cost of collectors, heating plant and distribution line is calculated as 687.456,5 TL. T*SOL modelling system also consider the energy costs inflation so Turkey's energy inflation is added as 17% to the model. The costs of natural gas and electricity is also added to the model. System's life span is determined as 20 years. According to result of modelling, annual heat gain from the system is 457.122,45 kW/h which is 28,85% of annual heat demand for heating the domestic hot water. This system will save the natural gas and reduce the CO2 emusions. System's calculated efficiency is 54,4% and calculated return on investment is 5,8 years. This results proves that system is feasible to use. Moreover, results of this thesis is roughly compared with results of a thesis which was modelled a solar domestic hot water heating system for Sports Center of Istanbul Technical University, Ayazaga Campus. Results of this test was 6,6 years as the return on investment. This can be also a rough result for show that solar district heating systems are more efficient. End of the thesis, there are some suggestions for improvements to have a better comparison between individual and district solar heating systems.
