In relativistic heavy ion colliders, heavy ions that have a large charge make peripheral collisions at relativistic velocities. Because of the strong electromagnetic fields, pairs are produced and these are the reasons of many physical events. The fully ionized heavy ions collide with energies 100 GeV and 3400 GeV per nucleon, in their center of mass frames at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC), respectively. Lorentz contracted strong electromagnetic fields are formed around the ions and from these electromagnetic fields large numbers of different particles such as electron-positron pairs, muon pairs, vector bosons, weak vector bosons and may be the Higgs particles are produced. It is thought that these particles especially lepton pairs that are produced from electromagnetic fields may mask the signals coming from the quark-gluon plasma phase. In this work, we have focused on the free and bound-free electron-positron pair that are produced in strong electromagnetic fields. In ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, there are two dominant processes that restrict the luminosity of the ion beams. One of them is bound-free electron-positron pair production (BFPP) that occurs with the capture of the electron after the free electron-positron pair production and the positron goes his way freely. Captured electron by one of the colliding ions leads to a change in the charge and mass of the ions and causes the ion to fall out of the beam. The calculation of the electron capture process is important for the lifetime of the beam. The other process that restricts the luminosity of the ion beams is giant dipole resonance (GDR). In the GDR, the Coulomb force dissociates the nucleus where the protons and neutrons oscillate against each other. Then, the neutrons fall out of the beam. The excited ions decay by emission of one or more neutrons and these neutrons are detected in the forward Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC). In this thesis, using the semi-classical approximation, we calculate the cross section for bound-free electron-positron pair production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the framework of perturbative quantum electrodynamics (QED) at the leading order. To evaluate the analytically obtained integrals and reach the accurate values, Monte Carlo techniques are utilized. The integrands are tested on about ten million random points to ensure a sufficient convergence of our theoretical results. The total numerical errors in the computations is estimated to be less than or equal to five percent. In this thesis, BFPP cross sections for RHIC and LHC energies are calculated. Firstly, we obtain analytical integrals for BFPP by using perturbative QED methods and then we reach the numerical solutions by using Monte Carlo methods. We compare and comment our BFPP cross section results with the cross section results that are reached by using different methods in the past years. The obtained numerical BFPP results are explained with the graphs (for the differential cross sections of the produced positrons as function of the transverse momentum, longitudinal momentum, energy and rapidity) that are not interpreted in the other articles before. In this thesis, we also calculate the impact parameter dependent bound-free electron-positron pair production probability with no electromagnetic interaction for RHIC and LHC energies. By using the data of the other works for BFPP probability for RHIC energy, we obtain the impact parameter dependent BFPP probability function. These two impact parameter dependent BFPP probability functions that are obtained for the first time are compared and interpreted. We calculate the BFPP cross sections with GDR for RHIC and LHC energies for the one neutron emission (1n) and for any number of neutron emission (Xn) states that are not calculated in the literature before. The BFPP cross sections with GDR results are explained (the differential cross section as function of the energy, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum and rapidity of the produced positrons for the BFPP without nuclear excitation (untagged), the BFPP with 1n1n excitation and the BFPP with XnXn excitation (tagged) states) with graphics. In the near future, we are planning to compare these obtained theoretical results with the experimental results that will be reached in LHC.
