Soils exhibit non linear behaviour even at small strain; in the serviceability limit state many geotechnical structures (such as shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, etc.) can be analyzed using elastic approaches, which accuracy is, to a large extent, influenced by the possibility of taking into account non linear behaviour. One of the main points is to be able to evaluate and introduce in the analyses stiffness parameters referred to appropriate strain levels. In this way also very simple linear models, often adopted in practice, can be used to reproduce, e.g., the actual soil-foundation behaviour. With this aim the paper reports some examples related to the use of elastic approaches, as well as the operational stiffness parameters that can be adopted in practice. These parameters, in relation to the particular soil-structure interaction case considered, have been obtained by the observation and analysis of many case records, thus allowing consideration on the applicability of such an approach.
