Environmental certification comes about as a tool to guide architectural design and to evaluate its sustainability. This is possible through the definition of evaluation parameters related to shared environmental problems. Environmental certification, however, now seems to become a marketing tool in the construction industry, a saturated market where supply is not always calibrated on demand and where there is a need to find new quality references. Several environmental certification systems have been analyzed in order to compare the environmental issues considered, the parameters considered significant and the weighing systems. The objective is to study the differences in "cultural background" and to verify their influence on architectural design and functional choices. A substantial uniformity has been found in the approach, a limited ability to guide the design choices and the most significant differences are regarding the procedures.
