Understanding the dynamic interactions between the cables and the main structural components in cable-stayed system constitues a crucial issue for prediction of overall dynamic behavior under environmental loading, structural identification and on-line health monitoring, and design of passive and active dissipation strategies. The paper summarizes the results of a large campaign of analysis on the effects of quadratic coupling between local and global modes in a simple cable-stayed beam. These analyses show that for a one-to-two global-local resonant system, the primary harmonic excitation of the global mode oscillation produces a transfer of energy to higher frequencies, twice of the global one, inducing very large oscillations of the local mode. The nonlinear interaction mechanism is fully described by means of analytical and experimental methods
