As the maritime dimension of the EU's Trans-European Transport Network, the Motorways of the Sea have the ultimate objective to fully integrate maritime transport into the global logistics chain. Serving 40% of the EU's internal trade and 75% of its external trade. maritime transport is an essential element in supporting Europe in maintaining its Number 1 position in global trade. EU funding is made available for projects that contribute to the development of the Trans-European Transport Network, including the Motorways of the Sea. These funds improve the efficiency of the maritime transport sector and complement the land-based networks in fostering a European transport space without barriers. The first Motorways of the Sea projects came into being only a few years later after its conception in 2001. From a mechanism to support short sea shipping as an alternative to road transport, funding for the Motorways of the Sea has today grown into a funding stream supporting the entire door-to-door maritime logistics chain. It seeks to reduce congestion on land, support the uptake of more sustainable transport modes, increase efficiency. and allow peripheral regions to be better accessible. This holistic approach has meant that a wider range of projects can qualify for funding, including in the fields of environment, logistics, maritime safety, traffic management and the human element. In parallel, the budgets allocated to Motorways of the Sea projects are also on the increase. The role of the Motorways of the Sea tomorrow will be to maintain and further improve the environmental advantage of sea-based transport, to make it more efficient, to continue to eliminate bottle-necks, and improve hinterland connections. Perhaps most importantly, the Motorways of the Sea will project the EU towards the outside, providing a clean, green. and efficient springboard for trade with third countries.
