The partial oxidn. of butane is examd. at ∼300° on aerogel type catalysts CuO/Al2O3 or xerogel type ZnO and ZnO/Cr2O3. The first is the typical catalyst of the partial oxidn. of olefins; the 2 others are known for their dehydrogenation activity of paraffins. Catalysts based on oxides of V and P, eventually assocd. with ZnO, are active and selective in the same reaction provided that V is in the oxidn. state +4 and not +5. This type of catalyst is mostly known for its activity in the oxidn. of butene into maleic anhydride (I). The catalyst contg. only V5+ ions is only active in the total oxidn. of butane. The main products of the reaction, like furan and MeCH:CHCHO (II) are intermediates of the synthesis of I. The presence of II is assocd. with the presence of AcCH:CH2 which is not the intermediate product of the formation of I. The conversion of butane into the previous compds. implies its previous dehydrogenation (oxidative or not), because the reaction of 1-butene in the same exptl. conditions leads almost to the same selectivities into products of partial oxidn. A second dehydrogenation intermediate of butane must be formed for a V4+ and ZnO catalysts because only furan and HOAc are products of partial oxidn. [on SciFinder(R)]
