Traduire le français québécois: Les Belles-Soeurs de Michel Tremblay débarquent en Italie

This paper analyses the Italian translation of Michel Tremblay’s Les Belles-sœurs, published in 1994 with the title Le cognate. First, we provide a general overview of the strategies used by Scottish, Polish and Czech translators to render “joual”, the working-class language typically used in Tremblay’s plays. Then, we show how Italian translators were able to translate into the language of Dante all particularities typical of oral Québécois French, including anglicisms, quebecisms, archaisms, neographisms, neologisms and swearwords.
