Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in calcium homeostasis, muscle performance, neuroprotection, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. It is estimated that 20% of all cancer cases are related to obesity. Vitamin D is thought to be one of the underlying factors in this association. However, the relationship with melanoma (M) is complex because of the influence of sunlight. Indeed, although ultraviolet type B are required to produce vitamin D, they are also considered as one of the most important risk factors for M and non-M skin cancers.

Abstract

Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in calcium homeostasis, muscle performance, neuroprotection, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. It is estimated that 20% of all cancer cases are related to obesity. Vitamin D is thought to be one of the underlying factors in this association. However, the relationship with melanoma (M) is complex because of the influence of sunlight. Indeed, although ultraviolet type B are required to produce vitamin D, they are also considered as one of the most important risk factors for M and non-M skin cancers.
