Epidemiologic studies show that overweight/obese people with a good cardiovascular and respiratory compliance have a reduced risk of related metabolic complications in comparison with people with normal weight but in better physical shape. Some obese adults and children can therefore be seen as "metabolically health" people. From this background moves the interdisciplinary debate on healthy or ill obesity, the importance or not of a strict control on eating and life styles being a central point in it. Diagnosis, interventions and their evaluation cannot anymore be based only on weight and weight loss, they should become an inter- and intra-disciplinary challenge.

Abstract

Epidemiologic studies show that overweight/obese people with a good cardiovascular and respiratory compliance have a reduced risk of related metabolic complications in comparison with people with normal weight but in better physical shape. Some obese adults and children can therefore be seen as "metabolically health" people. From this background moves the interdisciplinary debate on healthy or ill obesity, the importance or not of a strict control on eating and life styles being a central point in it. Diagnosis, interventions and their evaluation cannot anymore be based only on weight and weight loss, they should become an inter- and intra-disciplinary challenge.
