This book is a guide for breeders, farmers, students and everyone who is interested in cattle breeding in Europe. It gives a picture of the cattle breeding situation in Italy at the beginning of the new millennium. All the necessary and important information is disclosed for each cattle breed. The reader will find the description of the indigenous Italian breeds together with foreign breeds (mainly from Europe, but also from America and Asia). For each indigenous and foreign breed a file with the history, morphology, production, breeding goal, breeding scheme and breeding index is available. In this book the reader will find the indigenous Italian breeds recorded by the AIA (Italian breeders association) together with the new foreign breeds recorded by the IZS (Institute for animal health and hygiene) of Teramo that are today raised in this country. While most of the traditional breeds are well-known, little or nothing is known about the imported breeds. This book will guide the reader through the indigenous, European, American and Asian breeds that are playing important social and economic roles in Italy at the beginning of the new millennium. The intention of the authors is to highlight the importance of the European, American and Asian breeds, and hope that in the future they will be treated in the same way as the indigenous Italian breeds.
