This paper presents the design and optimization of an eddy-current testing system for the imaging of surface-breaking defects in conductive materials. The reconstruction of the defects is obtained by an efficient noniterative method, based on the monotonicity property that makes the approach suitable for real-time imaging. The design of the system is extremely difficult, because its performances and feasibility can be viewed only by many perspectives, leading to a multiobjective optimization problem. The main contributions of this paper are: 1) introducing appropriate indexes for measuring the performances of the system and 2) a related design strategy. Numerical examples prove the effectiveness of the design strategy
