Background. It is well known that at the Emergency Dept. of the general hospital the physicians achieve the absolutely highest level of burnout. Their needs for continuing education have a lot of responses in terms of good clinical practice and specific guidelines at the Maggiore general hospital in Bologna. No previous project was implemented concerning doctor’s emotional reactions to “difficult patients”. Objectives. Starting from the prolonged cooperation between CLP and emergency dept., a pilot project was designed on 2003 for a continuing education program devoted to all the 26 general medicine physicians of the emergency department. It was based on 2 key points: (1) topics for discussion chosen by doctors themselves in a preliminary phase, (2) small group discussions.
