Abstract

In the EU the legal status of third-country students, researchers and lecturers basically depends on three directives adopted in the last ten years. The EU Law intends to simplify the procedure for admitting third-country students and foster the admission and mobility for research purposes of third-country nationals. The legal status of third-country students differs from that of the EU students as well as from that of third-country researchers. The last one is especially advantageous as it aims at making the EU more attractive for researchers coming from around the world. The EU Law in this field intends to strengthen its position in the world economy, with a view at turning itself into one of the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based systems. This approach also includes measures shaped to attract and retain highly qualified third-country workers. This paper aims at underlining the objectives of the EU measures in this field and assessing if the legislation already needs to be improved
