The conformation of N,N'-diaryl ureas in soln. is studied to obtain information about stacking interactions between arom. rings. The only isomer which appears to exist has both arom. rings in an anti relationship to the O of the urea. Anal. of NMR and uv spectra suggests that there is a charge-transfer interaction between the two rings, esp. when they are substituted with electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups.
