The combination of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with electrospray mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS) is a powerful tool for the detection of polar natural toxins. The suitability of the method for the analysis of assorted toxins produced by cyanobacteria and its application to cultured and field cyanobacterial samples was investigated. Standard toxins examined included saxitoxins (PSP toxins), cylindrospermopsin, deoxycylindrospermopsin, anatoxin-a and microcystins LR and RR. Detection limits ranged from 60 to 600 femtomoles injected with good linearity and reproducibility. The method proved quite robust with similar results obtained in two different laboratories using different instrumentation. Application of the method to field and cultured samples of Anabaena circinalis and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii will be presented.
