Abstract

Friendship, inheritance and gifts are classical terms that Bataille uses “otherwise”, thus placing himself in a position that is both central and eccentric among twentieth century thinkers. He was Nietzsche’s only friend and heir and passing his work down to subsequent generations. It passed to Foucault and Derrida through Blanchot, authors that share and condense in their writings both philosophical thoughts and literary experience. Foucault pursues a line of thought considering folly, déraison and sexuality in connection with the theme of “transgression”. Derrida, on the other hand, moves from the difference between lordship and sovereignty, from a limited economy to a general economy pursuing the theme of expenditure without reservations to the “impossible gift” which breaks the circuit of economic exchange and dialectic return. The gift of friendship that is communicated “between us” through writing, a form of testament, and across the generations lets us speak to friends, not of our friends, lets us communicate the always unique “inner experience” of men of different times. This is an experience that must be described even beyond the limits of discursive language
