The article analyses the sentence of the European Court of Human Rights of 31 October 2019 about the case “Papageorgiu and others v. Greece”. It focuses mainly on some pivotal issues of the contemporary debate about teaching and learning religion in European schools. The perspective of the historian of religions is useful for framing this case within the field of education, didactics, and epistemology of religions, with a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, which highlights cultural and confessional aspects. From the presence of religious symbols to the management of school canteens, with religious based menu, and to the elaboration of programs and schoolbooks, schools can be a litmus test of the success of the practices and politics related to religious diversity.
