Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between Mediators (finances and transportation) within the Environmental Domain and Intrapersonal Factors (action control, locus of control, and self-efficacy) of the Non-Cognitive Domain within the Socio-Ecological Outcomes (SEO) model, as defined by Wood and Harris (2013). The researcher used ex post facto data collected from the Community College Survey of Men (Wood & Harris, 2013) through several Minority Male Initiative programs throughout the United States. The independent variables for this research were Mediators within the Environmental Domain, which are factors outside of the institution that influence student success. These factors included finances and transportation. The dependent variables were identified as Intrapersonal Factors within the Non-Cognitive Domain. Wood and Harris (2013) have posited that the perceptions men of color have of their educational experiences, and their feelings and emotions about those experiences, may influence student success outcomes. They define those perceptions as Intrapersonal Factors. In this research, the Intrapersonal Factors included self-efficacy, locus of control, and action control. The particular domains and factors for this research were chosen because of the limited amount of research that Wood and others have conducted on these elements of the SEO model, and how these elements affect student success for men of color (Wood, 2012, Freeman & Huggans, 2009; Perrakis 2008, Mason, 1998).
