Thesis (M.A.)--University of Rochester and George Eastman Museum, Photographic Preservation and Collections Management, 2019.
The George Eastman Museum houses a significant number of vernacular photographs. Among these examples are many three-dimensional or embellished manifestations, generally referred to here as hybrid photographic objects. However, because of their complex nature and a lack of scholarship surrounding them, these hybrid photographic objects present unique challenges for cataloging and preservation. Although popular histories of the medium have neglected many of these objects, they remain integral to the history of photography and material culture. My master’s essay establishes a set of cataloging standards for these works, and applies them to a subset of thirty objects from the George Eastman Museum’s permanent collection in order to provide enhanced access to and thus a greater understanding of hybrid photographic objects.
