Abstract

There are huge estimated gas reserves, 277 - 900 trillion cubic feet, entrapped within the matrix and fracture systems of the Devonian shales. Of this, only 20 - 50 (Tcf) is expected to be recoverable using present techniques. Conditions appear to be good for the production of natural gas from the Devonian shales in Lawrence County. Thermal maturity, fracture density, and organic content are sufficient for natural gas production from the Devonian shales. There are several black shale gas producing zones within the Devonian shales, the biggest of which is the Huron member of the Ohio Shale. Thirty- three control points in the Lawrence County area were used to make eight subsurface maps for the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian strata. These maps were derived from data based upon gamma ray and neutron well log information. The structure maps for the Berea, Lower Huron, Olentangy, and Onondaga; as well as isopach maps for various sections of the Upper Devonian shales were compared and contrasted for similarities and differences. A fence diagram was also constructed to indicate regional trends of the Upper Devonian - Lower Mississippian sequence.
