Abstract

Memorial Statement for Professor Louis Leibovitz, V.M.D. (1921-1998) who was Associate Professor (1973), Professor (1982), and Emeritus Professor (1988) at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. He also served as Field Veterinarian at the Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory when he made "the first diagnosis of duck plague (duck virus enteritis) in North America" along with extensive studies of domestic and wild waterfowl diseases. "His major activity during his stay in Ithaca was the development and implementation of a comprehensive program of teaching, research and service in the area of aquatic animal medicine." Dr. Leibovitz also established a Fish Diagnostic Laboratory and worked on problems related to the shellfish industry. From 1981 to 1989, he was based at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts as Director of the Marine Animal Health Laboratory and was involved with the AQUAVET Program in training veterinary students. The memorial statements contained herein were prepared by the Office of the Dean of the University Faculty of Cornell University to honor its faculty for their service to the university.
