Os festivais de verão, o turismo em espaço rural e o desenvolvimento de territórios rurais: o caso de Paredes de Coura

Abstract

O surgimento e a realização de inúmeros festivais de música de verão, fenómeno de crescimento notável sobretudo nas duas últimas décadas, devem-se ao reconhecimento da importância da sua realização para o desenvolvimento de determinados territórios. O festival de Paredes de Coura é um dos mais importantes festivais de música nacionais, através do qual se desenvolvem diversas relações, sociais e espaciais. Esta dissertação procura analisar e discutir sobre a formação de comunidades no festival, percebendo que elementos contribuem para a instituição de um sentido de identidade e pertença; identificar e discutir as principais motivações para participar no festival, envolvendo por sua vez, a escolha de Paredes de Coura como destino; e discutir alguns dos impactes do festival, nomeadamente na construção da imagem do destino e do festival, mas também no território físico. A experiência pessoal e a interacção com diversos participantes durante as edições de 2012 e 2013 foram essenciais para a consolidação das perspectivas aqui adoptadas. Enquanto a discussão sobre as imagens, as motivações e as experiências foi reforçada pelo contacto mais efectivo com uma amostra virtual. Se por um lado, se apreende que o festival de música é a principal motivação para viajar para Paredes de Coura, as experiências, as imagens e o sentido de identidade e pertença, contribuem para a formação da imagem do destino. A experiência dos participantes assume grande importância no que se refere à construção das imagens, e também os impactes do festival de Paredes de Coura e todas as relações sociais e territoriais subjacentes à sua realização envolvem diversas dimensões, e todas elas devem ser consideradas.

The emergence and realization of numerous summer music festivals, which have been rising considerably in the last two decades, are a result of their importance in the development of some territories. The Paredes de Coura festival is one of the most important music festivals within the Portuguese territory, through which social and spatial relations take presence. The aim of this thesis is, firstly, to analyse and discuss the community’s development within this festival, while trying to understand which are the key elements in the creation of senses of identity and belonging; secondly, to identify and discuss which are the main reasons behind the public’s affluence to this musical event, while overseeing Paredes de Coura as a touristic place; and finally, to discuss some of the festival’s impacts, especially in the construction of the place and the festival’s image but also of its physical territory. Personal experience and the interaction with some of the public who attended the 2012 and 2013’s editions were essential for the results presented in this thesis. The images’ discussions, the motivations and the experiences were reinforced by a more effective contact approached through a visual demonstration. If, on one side, it is possible to conclude that the music festival itself is the main reason for people’s affluence to Paredes de Coura; the experiences, the images, the sense of identity and sense of belonging, are a major contribution for the construction of the place’s image. While the public’s experience is of great importance when developing the imagery of Paredes de Coura, its impacts on the place and on all of the social and territorial relationships related to it, possess different and complex dimensions, which need to be carefully considered.
