Reinterpretar a memória: um projeto para o Castelo e Castro de Faria

Abstract

A presente dissertação visa a valorização do Castelo e Castro de Faria, implantado na Serra da Franqueira, Barcelos. Monumento Nacional desde 1956, foi palco de inúmeras vitórias e derrotas das gentes que o habitaram, desde o Calcolítico até à Idade Média. Num envolvimento lírico com o sítio, conhece-se o seu vasto arco cronológico, mergulhando por séculos de história. Sem esquecer o seu atual estado de ruína, parte-se de uma análise geral ao território, onde se evidencia o panorama em que este se insere: a Serra da Franqueira é, igualmente, um importante marco territorial e patrimonial concelhio, servindo de apoio às populações rurais contíguas. É pela crescente valorização do seu património que acolhe, nos dias de hoje, uma série de novos consumos do seu território, abrindo-se à chegada de peregrinos do Caminho Português de Santiago. Partindo dessa realidade em constante transformação e em sintonia entre as reminiscências passadas e os usos atuais do espaço, entende-se a necessidade da experimentação do Lugar, permitindo que o mesmo se explique, à medida que é percorrido. A história do Castelo e Castro de Faria, sobre a qual se constrói a Biografia do Lugar, é o mote à intervenção projetual. Numa relação transcendente com as memórias dos povoados - vivas na ruína -, o projeto de arquitetura surge como uma nova camada ocupacional, que, sendo contemporânea, se apresenta como uma ponte entre o passado e um possível futuro. Admitindo as particularidades do sítio, as suas vidas, e a aura mágica que mistifica o Lugar, o construído toma parte na criação de uma memória coletiva que, à luz do passado, preserve e projete o Lugar na posteridade. O estudo às vidas que ocuparam e, ainda hoje, ocupam os solos montanhosos, traduz-se na valorização dos trilhos da Serra da Franqueira, incluindo-os na lógica do Caminho Português de Santiago. Reconhecendo os trilhos abertos pelos povoados antigos, aproveita-se o fenómeno crescente de valorização patrimonial, para a unificação dos vestígios históricos num único percurso. É desta nova realidade social que se prospera uma nova vida para o Castelo e Castro de Faria. Incluindo-o nesta rota, desenha-se um percurso cronológico pelos vestígios exumados, percebendo-se a história do Lugar, à medida que o mesmo é percorrido. Numa relação indissociável do seu Genius Loci, reinventa-se a memória dos povoados que outrora habitaram a Serra, elevando espacialidades que recriam construções perdidas do tempo. Deste modo, a arquitetura - que procura evidenciar os vestígios seculares da história deste povo -, transforma-se no principal motor de reinterpretação da memória, aproximando, fenomenologicamente, o passado ao futuro - o visível ao sensível.

The following dissertation aims for the valorization of the Castelo e Castro de Faria, implanted in Franqueira’s Hill, Barcelos. A national monument since 1956, it was the stage of inumerous victories and defeats of the people that there settled, since the Chalcolithic period to the Middle Ages. In a lyrical merge with the place, it introduces its vast chronological arc, submerged in centuries of history. Without forgetting its present wrecked state, it begins with a general region analysis, where it is pointed its mountaineer outlook: Franqueira’s Hill is, at the same time, an important heritage milestone, serving as support to the near villagers. Due to the raising valorization of its heritage, nowadays, it holds numerous usages of the land, giving shelter to the arriving of Caminho Português de Santiago pilgrims. Its incessant transformation and heritage reminisces, brings the need to rediscover the place, allowing it to be reborn. Its history, explained in Biografia do Lugar, is the motto to the project’s intervention. In a transcendent relation with the still living memories of the villagers - through the wreckage -, the architecture project appears as a new occupational layer that, although contemporary, presents itself as a bridge between the past and a possible future. Considering the particularities of the place, the life that comes with it, and its magical aura that gives the place an unknown mysticism, the project takes its place in a collective memory that, in the light of the past, preserves and protects the fate of the so called Lugar. The study of the people that lived, and still do, in the mountain soils, can be translated in the valorization of Franqueira’s Hill’s trails, including them in the logic of Caminho Português de Santiago. By reusing the old trails, opened by the pre-historic villagers, this raising patrimonial valorization phenomenon is utilized to unify historical vestiges. It is thanks to this journey and this new social reality that a new life for the Castro de Faria’s Castle flourishes. By including it in this trail, a new chronological path is drawn by the vestiges, presenting itself as the History of the Place. In an inseparable relation with his Genius Loci, the memory of the Hill’s old villagers is reinvented, lifting morphologies and recreating forms once lost in time. Thus, the architecture – that seeks bespeaking secular vestiges of this people’s history – transforms itself in the main memory reinterpretation engine, phenomenologically approaching the past to the future – the visible to the sensitive.
