Representações da Primeira Guerra do Ópio em Macau (1839-1842)

Abstract

A presente dissertação de Mestrado em História analisa a forma como o governo do território de Macau reagiu perante a Guerra do Ópio (1839-1842) e se adaptou à nova conjuntura política no delta do rio das Pérolas. A investigação é o resultado da análise de fontes chinesas traduzidas, portuguesas e inglesas, sendo de salientar as representações do estabelecimento face ao conflito e a reação de Macau no pósconfronto, na sequência da fundação de uma colónia inglesa com condições mais favoráveis ao comércio internacional comparativamente a Macau, Hong Kong.

This dissertation in History analises the ways that Macao reacted to the Opium War (1836-1842) and how it adapted to the new political challenges in the Pearl River Delta. The research is based on the analysis of translated Chinese, Portuguese and English sources regarding Macao’s position regarding the Opium War (1839-1842). The two main points I analyse are Macau’s representations of the war and its reaction in the aftermath of the founding of an English colony with more favorable conditions for international trade, Hong Kong.
