Servir no Santo Ofício: os Lourenço Ferreira e a sua ascensão social na Bahia dos séculos XVII e XVIII

Abstract

Este estudo pretende dar a conhecer as trajetórias de vida de três homens, naturais do concelho de Braga, com a mesma raiz familiar, e que emigraram para o Brasil nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Os três homens da família Lourenço Ferreira vieram a tornar-se mercadores em S. Salvador da Bahia tendo posteriormente ingressado como familiares no Santo Ofício. Através dos testemunhos registados nos depoimentos em seus processos de habilitação ao Santo Ofício, constatamos que todos eles estavam ligados a parentes com projeção já firmada em atividades mercantis na cidade do Porto dos séculos XVII e XVIII. São estes mercadores os presumíveis mentores das atividades que os Lourenço Ferreira iriam desenvolver no Brasil. Num processo de interajuda, todos acabaram por prosperar, demonstrando teias e ligações nestes processos migratórios. Numa época em que a mobilidade social era difícil no Novo Mundo, onde não existia uma nobreza, abria-se uma janela àquelas dificuldades normativas através de várias estratégias como as habilitações, por exemplo, à Ordem de Cristo ou ao ingresso nos quadros do Santo Ofício, via que implicava sempre um atestado de “limpeza de Sangue” e ter uma conduta moral inquestionável. Este tipo de estratégia, contudo, só estaria acessível a alguns, devido a ser uma operação muito onerosa. A cidade da Bahia foi a cidade brasileira em que mais familiares do Santo Ofício foram registados. Muitos destes emigrantes optaram por ficar no Brasil onde casavam e constituíam família, outros, porém regressaram às suas terras solteiros. Dos três familiares em análise, dois, João e António Lourenço Ferreira ficaram no Brasil e aí casaram, e só Domingos Lourenço Ferreira regressou ao Minho, mais concretamente a Braga, onde veio a casar com Teresa de Araújo da qual teve três filhos. O nosso trabalho analisa o processo destes três parentes a familiares do Santo Ofício na cidade da Bahia, demonstrando como o sucesso nos negócios lhes abriu portas a uma instituição poderosa, legitimando a sua ascensão social.

The aim of this study is to make people aware of the life trajectories of three men born in Braga. They belonged to the same family root and emigrated to Brazil in the 17th and 18th centuries. Those three men of the family Lourenço Ferreira became merchants in S. Salvador da Bahia and then joined the Holy Office as family members. Through the documented reports of their testimonies in their permission process to the Holy Office, it has been verified that all of them were connected to relatives who standed out in mercantile activities in Oporto in the 17th and 18th centuries. These merchants are the presumable mentors of the activities that the Lourenço Ferreira would develop in Brazil. In a mutual aid process, all of them managed to prosper, exposing networks and connection throughout these migratory processes. In a time of difficult social mobility in the New World, where nobility as a social group didn’t exist, a window of opportunities was opening to those normative difficulties. This happened through several strategies such as the permission processes to the Order of Christ or the full entry in the Holy Office, which would demand a certification of “Blood purity” and an unquestionable moral conduct. However, this kind of strategy wasn’t available to everyone because it was a very onerous operation. Bahia was the Brazilian city where more familiars of the Holy Office were registered. Many of these emigrants chose to stay in Brazil, where they got married and started a family. Nevertheless, some of them returned single to their motherland. Regarding the three analysed relatives, two of them, João and António Lourenço Ferreira, remained in Brazil and got married there. Only Domingos Lourenço Ferreira returned to Minho, more specifically to Braga, where he got married to Teresa de Araújo and had three children. This academic work analyses the process of these three relatives to familiars of the Holy Office in the city of Bahia, demonstrating how business success opened doors to a powerful institution, legitimating their social rising.
