Abstract
This paper explores the concept of leadership in the adult education literature. This is achieved by using a content analysis of relevant academic writing. The research question is simply: what is the contemporary literature saying about leadership in adult education? This study is significant because it provides an overdue review of the contemporary literature. Six themes emerged from the data: what is a leader, relationships in leadership, empowerment, shared leadership, women’s leadership, and leadership preparation. Taken together, these themes describe a relational, inclusive approach to leadership that values a shared vision, collaboration and self-reflection.
