Abstract:	O presente artigo tem por objetivo compreender o caráter nocivo que a retórica representa à democracia, segundo Platão. Para tanto, será examinado o papel da personagem Cálicles e a sofística no diálogo platônico Górgias. Esta investigação irá estruturar--se da seguinte forma: apresentação de alguns temas gerais acerca da filosofia platônica (rechaço da sofística e construção do conhecimento objetivo); análise da estrutura do diálogo; análise do papel da personagem Cálicles. Em seguida, será tratada a questão da nocividade da retórica à democracia, mas que, ainda assim, é uma “prática” largamente empregada, uma vez que um discurso verdadeiro (parresía), por não convencer, acaba não tendo força persuasiva para conquistar o démos (povo), ou seja, é ineficaz.
Abstract:	This article aims to understand the harmful role that rhetoric has in a democracy according to Plato. Therefore, the role of the character Callicles and sophistry in the Platonic dialogue Gorgias will be examined. This research will be structured as follows: presentation of some general topics about Platonic philosophy (rejection of sophistry and construction of objective knowledge); analysis of the dialog’s frame; analysis of the role of the character Callicles. Then, it will discuss the harm caused by rhetoric to democracy, but still as a widely used “practice”, since a true discourse (parrhesia), which is not convincing, does not have persuasive force to win over the demos (people), in other words, it is ineffective.
