- Abstract
- This paper offers a cross-linguistic survey of the main types of possible developments in case systems. In Section 2 focuses on the main mechanisms of the rise of new cases and expansion of case systems (case-increasing). Section 3 deals with the loss of cases and decay of case systems (case-reducing). Section 4 discusses some processes within case systems which do not lead to quantitative changes but help to resist phonetic erosion (stable case systems). On the basis of this diachronic typological overview, I outline in Section 5 a tentative classification of the evolutionary types of languages from the point of view of case systems. It is argued that one of the main factors determining the evolutionary type of a language is the areal (rather than genetic) relationship.
