Abstract
Between 2002 and 2012 around 30 piled embankments were constructed in The Netherlands. Due to the presence of very soft soils, generally piled embankments with a basal reinforcement are constructed. A piled embankment consists of a field of piles with (or sometimes without) pile caps over which geosynthetic reinforcement (GR) is placed, prior to building up the embankment with granular material, which can range from sand to crushed aggregate. This paper summarizes the basic idea of GR design, considering vertical load only and goes on to present two field studies and a summery of the results of these measurements. The field studies lead to further laboratory research with model experiments. The experiments and the most important conclusions derived from them, combined with the field studies, in turn lead to the suggestions for the modification of the calculation model that is adopted in both the Dutch CUR 226 and German EBGEO design guidelines for piled embankments.
