Abstract: The present dissertation offers an overview on the role of geniality in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, making it possible to identify that geniality is located in the bounds of the Kantian system of criticism, therefore, the artistic production is only possible ecause the faculties of the genius remain in the super sensible realm and art is produced on the sensible world. Thus, the genius finds himself as part of a battle present throughout the Kantian system: the distinction between freedom and nature, so the genius must be free to make a work of art and simultaneously belong to nature which is determined. Also remarkable is the fact that the concept of geniality changes as the Kantian thought progresses. As for the pre critical period, there is the possibility of the genius moved by enthusiasm in the realms of both, science and art; such a surprising fact once geniality is, according to Kant, inborn, a gift given by nature, and to talk about something being inborn is, to say the least, controversial in terms of science. Nevertheless, in the critical period geniality is limited to the artistic production, vanishing completely from the scientific perspective. The enthusiasm which moved the artistic and the scientific geniuses remain almost intact, except from the fact that Kant calls it Great Minds in the sciences and Geniuses when it comes to the matters of art. Another aspect analyzed by this project is that art is only possible through freedom, through a will that establishes reason as the core of its actions. This is new to the Kantian thought since the mechanism in which actions are based on reason was limited to morality, but with KdU it is also responsible for the artistic production.
