Abstract: This research is inserted in the field of Design, specifically in the animated Instructional Design field. Having a theoretical deepening in concepts related to issues such as Pedagogy as well as Organic Chemistry. The main objective was to investigate the effects of the different modalities of media (static image and animation) on the learning of organic chemical mechanisms in the classroom context. To reach the proposed goal this project was split in two main moments, on of bibliographic research and an experiment. The experiment was separated in many stages, the first being an observation of the two investigated groups, then it was applied an exercises with the groups, one shortly after the lesson in question and one a few weeks later. Finally a questionary was asked for the students and an interview was made with the teacher that taught the class. The main results draw to the conclusion that animations and static images are equally effective in the teaching of chemical mechanisms, being both modalities more effective to the realization of short-term tasks. More relevant findings (that went beyond the initial expectations method proposed in the Method) were in the sense of the attention payed by the students during the classes. It was noticed that students payed more attention when exposed to animations, this data can be used by teachers to adopt new strategies during their classes to enhance student attention. Emphasizing the importance of a partnership between the technical knowledge of the designer and the conceptual knowledge of the teacher to production of didactic material that are excellent in both aspects.
